~なければならない — must

English: “must / have to.” Japanese expresses obligation as a double negative that literally means “if you don’t, it won’t do”: 〜なければならない (formal), 〜なきゃ (casual). The flip side — “don’t have to” — is 〜なくてもいい. Clunky at first, automatic with use.
