と — and / with

English “and” joins anything — nouns, verbs, whole clauses. Japanese と is narrower: it joins nouns (“A and B”) and marks who you did something with. 友達と行く (go with a friend), コーヒーとケーキ (coffee and cake). To join actions you’ll use other tools — と is for nouns only.
